2019 Autumn Book Review

Image
This fall line-up was straight FIRE, y'all! I read a couple more that didn't make the cut for this post because I'm not here to waste your time with mediocre literature. Add these to your Christmas list, cozy up to your Christmas tree, and get your read on! The Day We Met by Rowan Coleman 4 stars This is a heart-wrencher! The main character is learning how to navigate the diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's. Her relationships with her own mother, her daughters, and her husband take center stage as she struggles with knowing her own identity. A sweet read the whole way through.  That's What Frenemies are For by Lauren Gershell 4 stars Wealthy Julia has it all: perfect husband, kids, and house in NYC (complete with a housekeeper, of course). She also has the Midas touch when it comes to catapulting places and people to Upper East Side fame. Gossip Girl meets Big Little Lies in this sizzler about keeping up appearances in this Instagram age. ...

Nerd for Days

I am a total nerd. I love school supplies. I love organizing for a new year. I make color-coded file folders on my computer. I get excited when I enroll for the next semester. And this year is no exception. Fall 2013 is going to be legen...waitforit...DARY. I'm going to be in class 19 hours every week...but I think I'll love every second. Women&Film, Native American Literature, Sociology of Deviance, Religion&Society, my LAST semester of French, and teacher assisting for Gateway will rule my weeks. Reading and writing and thinking about people are some of my favorite activities. I wonder if I'll even feel like I'm in school.  But you know what I love even more than school? Getting mail. So, y'all get to writin' cuz I know A Very Lucky Girl is worth 46 cents for postage.  316 Cate Center Drive Box 5012 Norman, OK 73072

Beowulf

Image
I complained and complained about reading Beowulf last the weekend. And complained. To anyone and everyone that would listen. Or maybe they didn't listen. I'm not a Beowulf kind of girl. It felt like reading the Lord of the Rings in poetry form. I barely made it through the Hobbit with the my love of reading intact. Conner teased me about the love lost between me and the story about dragons. (seriously, dragons? My favorite book is Little Women...)  Boys are stupid. Except for this next one. He knew how much I was HATING my sojourn through the thin pages of the Norton Anthology of English Literature and brought me sour patch kids and an ice cold water (these are a few of my favorite things...Sound of Music reference anyone?) on his way home from work on Sunday night. Life, in general, is better with an orange or green sour patch kid in your mouth. The reds are still in my room. Any takers? Even after discussing the text in class, Beowulf is still not a hero I will plast...
