Houston

I have a new address. A new place with which to answer the question, "So, where are you from?" Houston is my new home.  My dad and I moved into the new house over the Labor Day weekend. It's in a great location, close to countless yummy places to eat (I think I gained 10 pounds in 3 days), and also near a great running park (in order to counteract those yummy eateries).  Houston is only about an hour and a half away from Beaumont, so I'm looking forward to being so close to Moriah over Christmas break and summer. My elementary school friend, Nick (except now he's Mathison and I keep getting it wrong!), will graduate from Rice in May and he introduced me to a great new church I'm looking forward to attending more often when I come home.  There's a lot of looking forward going on. I can't change the events that brought me to Houston. They are in the past. But over the years and moves, I've become a pro at making the most of where I am, physically ...

Unlocked

I finally have a space to call my very own this semester at OU. I am living in a single dorm, but with this great privacy comes great responsibility. It would be easy to hibernate, coming out of room 35 only for class, food, and occassional dates with Tyler. My room is located at the very end of the hall, extrememly isolated from the other dorms in a dark corner.  I've decorated to make the room appealing and comforting, but hiding is not the best thing for me.  So I am making a huge effort to get heavily involved on campus during this fall semester. Come spring I'll be living in Dundee, Scotland, lightyears away from any semblance of a comfort zone. Putting myself out there this semester will lessen the eventual shock of the study abroad environment.  Even just thinking about new people is mentally draining. It's hard and it makes me want to take a nap. But A Very Lucky Girl can sleep when she's dead. For now, there are opportunities and relationships to seize. OUT...

Fleeting Idea

Vlogging. I thought about doing one, just one, for 1.37 seconds during a run the other day. And then I almost immediately decided against it for several reasons. Because I am not tech savvy enough to edit any attempts I would make at a video, I would have to make a flawless recording.  Writing a blog post is a fairly private activity, as is reading one. Talking or listening to something out loud seems to ruin the sanctity of words sometimes. I personally love to read other blogs when I should be doing something else. Like napping or listening to what Dr. Lee is droning on about. Jenna Marbles has the monopoly on vlogging and I could never measure up. She is the video blog goddess.  I hope you weren't hoping for a vlog. Because A Very Lucky Girl is not the least bit interested.

What's in a Title?

I was very intrigued when I looked over the blog statistics the other day, especially by the top ten most viewed posts. Bachelorette Recap: Premiere The Sleeping Dragon What's Black and White? Half a Year "Uhhh...Could You Spell That?" Life Curves Wait...I Said What!? Brother's Getting Old Pisses. Me. Off 5 and Counting What makes those subjects most appealing? Moriah informed me over my visit last weekend that she only reads the ones that have interesting titles. Well, then. Tyler has a possible theory, since two of the most popular posts include him and tidbits from our relationship, that humanity is innately curious about matters involving the heart. The more personal a post is, the more attention it receives. But then that still leaves the Bachelorette Recap sitting in the cold. Because that one is certainly more sarcastic than sappy. When I share the posts on social media, I hashtag the life outta 'em. #Bachelornation is clearly alive and well on...

An Acorn for Life

If I had to pick a favorite out of all the educational institutions I've attended, New Hope Academy in Franklin, Tennessee would take the number one spot. For two reasons: 1) I left after third grade, the drama in elementary school is fairly minimal; 2) the people. Kindergarden was my first year there. I narrowly escaped being homeschooled by Shari but Miss LaVerne (I'm 95% positive of her name) called in August, announcing that a spot had opened up. I think Shari and I were both relieved. I couldn't have asked for a better kindergarden teacher, they don't come much better than Tracy Utley. She homeschools her own boys now and I'm jealous that they get her teaching for more than one year; I would learn from her any and every day! I weirdly remember a very specific leopard print belt that she would wear sometimes, guess I was a wanna-be fashionista. Still am--a wannabe that is. Samantha Wilson became my very best friend and I started crushing hard on Nick Ingham. ...
