The Dunger Games

AKA--the Dundee Hunger Games.  Renan, one of the what seems like thousands brazilian exchange students, suggested we have a competition complete with water guns. I heard the word gun so obviously this American was up in arms about participating!   I needed a tutorial to fully understand the game, but after an intensive learning session with Zee, Renan, and Nat, coupled with Macca's fries and a trip to the 24-hour bakery, I think I've got it figured out.  Basically, everyone who wants in on the game chooses the name of another person, secretly in a folded sheet of paper. I've selected my target, and I was just relieved to actually know who they were! My next order of business was to purchase a water gun, both for defense and offense, which I did today at Poundland.  You see, I am obviously after a particular target, the name I chose, but if he or she knows I am coming for them (which they won't because I'm sneaky) and they spray me with water before I can attack?...

Wasp Huntin'

Image
I saw a wasp in my room the other day. I've been stung before by the pesky creatures. Five times at once, to be exact. I was running under a playground slide when I was 7 or 8 and accidently bumped the nest with my head. There ensued an angry chase. I wasn't fast enough.  So imagine my intense discomfort at the sight of one of those guys in my place of sleep. But this was not your normal, several centimeters large wasp. This was a trackerjacker. I was Katniss, this was the hunger games, and I didn't want to meet an end like Glimmer's.  So when the insect flew into the closet I promptly shut the door and decided the clothes already on my floor would have to do for the next few days. The thing could sit in the dark and think about whose space it had invaded. And hopefully starve. But it didn't starve. Days later, I bravely rummaged through my closet, packing clothes for Norman and Houston, and ran into the sucker. I grabbed the nearest flip flop, summoned my dragon...

Sore Loser

My competitiveness brings an interesting dynamic to relationships. Especially the one I have with Tyler. I've recently been paying more attention to my dictionary word-of-the-day notifications and tweeting a sentence a day using the new syllable(s). Today's word was "hamartia", a noun meaning "tragic flaw". It's hard to narrow it down when you have lots, but my tweet today read: "I have countless imperfections, but one glaring #hamartia is my extreme competitiveness when it matters least. #wordoftheday"-@AVeryLuckyGirl   It all started a few weeks ago with a trip to OKC to see my family one Sunday. I challenged Tyler to a game of Battleship. He was convinced that he could probably beat me. False. From the bonus room emitted a symphony of "hit"'s from Tyler and "miss"'s from me, followed by a few muffled choice words as Tyler realized he was losing to the Battleship Queen. I sank all of his ships with only minor s...

Hunger Games Critique

***Spoiler Warning: I'm tearing apart this movie. So if you haven't seen it or haven't read the books then please save this for later*** First things first, I read the second two books in 48 hours. Literally devoured those words. Consequently, I was on the edge of my seat for this movie. I knew I shouldn't expect Hollywood to accurately portray the scenes the way I saw them in my mind, but I had high hopes. I saw the premiere in New York City. Quick moment of silence for how bad-a** that is, please. I have never seen such a line in my life. The entire block was wrapped in people. And when I say entire block, I mean ALL four corners. The line was even longer than the line at Shake Shack (I have a horrible first world problem: I now want Shake Shack for every single meal. NYC ruined me.) and that's saying something, I thought I'd never get that promised burger. I clutched Hannah's hand as the movie began, unable to contain my excitement. But as the...

Hunger Games Craze

"Destroying things is much easier than making them"-Katniss Everdeen I balked and balked at reading The Hunger Games. I held out as long as possible to forego reading the Twilight series and finally fell victim to temptation, with disappointing results. Sure, I read them and even reread them but I didn't even watch the entire of Eclipse when I saw it in theaters and have yet to see a glimpse of Breaking Dawn. On another note, I haven't touched the Harry Potter series. They never ever interested me and I saw the same thing happening with The Hunger Games, so I prided myself on not relenting to peer pressure. Until Savannah (my RA turned great friend) essentially FORCE fed the book to me. She is majoring in elementary education and reading aloud is excellent practice for her future profession so she begged me to allow her to read the book to me. She was only halfway through, so she started, with a little backstory to help me along, at the point where Peeta professes...
