Judging and Being Judged

Image
So I was in Court today. Did you just freak out? Well, calm yourself, I was only the moral support for my friend. It was a completely new experience. If growing up means going to court I'd like to take the next train back to kindergarten, please. The courthouse itself is incredibly domineering and ominous, gray and uninviting (sorry, kinda got carried away with those adjectives). We walked up those stone steps, laughing and joking ("photo-op? let's commemorate this moment!") and instantly fell serious as we tiptoed inside. We were ushered through a metal detector (I am only used to these inside airports so to go through one without the promise of a flight directly after was slightly disappointing) and proceeded to sign in for arraignment. Commence people watching. We sat on a wooden bench (think church pew a long way from home) and instantly googled the presiding judge. Google images were unhelpful. Michael Tupper looked like someone who didn't get a bid d...

Sunshine and Self-Esteem

Image
Got my skin cancer on today. 2 solid hours of soaking up those gloriously delicious rays. I wish I could say I was really productive during my time outside, but instead I stared up at this gorgeous sky, speechless. Clear blue and cloudless-which is why I am sporting some truly sexy burn lines right now. Roasted cleavage? Check. Nike shorts line? Got 'em.  But I don't regret a minute of my sunshine soaked afternoon because I got some quality thinking time in. Scrolling through Tumblr the other day I stumbled upon a really depressing statement, "People think that they are 10 times more attractive than they actually are." Yikes. I'm certainly not saying that I am under the impression that I'm America's Next Top Model (maybe runner-up? JOKE), but neither do I think I need to be the star of Extreme Makeover: Plastic Surgery Edition. Paul gave me some pretty sweet green eyes (did you know that only 2% of the world's population has these olivine co...

On Time With a Chance of Early

Image
This title accurately describes my attendance style, whether it be for class, an appointment, or just a deadline I've set for myself, except when it comes to falling asleep. That's when I'm later then I should be. It's just that I don't want to miss anything! I'm sure that most things exciting (and all things mischievous) occur after 11 on a college campus. I live in fear of drifting off before midnight, only to be regaled the next morning with tales of all that I missed. Or in fear of drifting off and sleeping through all of my alarms. This is my biggest fear (and it has come to life several times) and it is the worst feeling in the world to wake up, groggy and disoriented, only to realize that Taylor Swift has been tirelessly singing "Enchanted" for the past hour and a half and that I am on my way to sleeping through my second class of the day.  For this reason I set multiple alarms, no matter the importance of the appointment. The problem is, ...

Putting on My Ruby Slippers

I'm currently channeling my inner Dorothy because there truly is no place like home! What I love about the 73120: (I skipped the rest of the address because I have several international views, which on the one hand is really cool! But on the other hand...potentially sketchy) Homemade Food. And by homemade I mean made by me at home. Because both Shari and Paul had prior dinner plans tonight (the risk you run with surprises), I got on my Paula Dean level and cooked some truly excellent spaghetti. That's pretty much the extent of my cooking skills, and I even almost ruined the whole thing when I grasped the pot of boiling pasta with my bare hands. Give me a break, I forgot oven mitts existed, alright? I don't get to cook at school! Good thing Shari doesn't like leaving me alone in her kitchen and was there in about .58 seconds to fix my mistake. Her hasty appearance made me wonder if she had just been waiting for something to go wrong.... I get to shower in my ve...

Shurrprise!

Image
Nothing beats a well-thought out surprise. One that's just planned enough to be perfectly spontaneous. I absolutely love surprises. Doesn't matter which end of the surprise I'm at. I think the surpriser and the surprisee have an equally good time. The problem with surprises is that they follow Murphy's Law of wanting to bubble out and spill over, ruining the careful preparation. Yeah, kinda like that. But somehow I've managed to contain most of my surprises, and they have made memories that I hold close to this day. And some new ones will be made today ;) I'm most certainly looking forward to it. Literally CANNOT wait. Love these people. Love my life. Love, A Very Lucky Girl.

Idyllic Idleness

Friday. Just savor that word. Let it melt on your tongue. Friday. I am so guilty of favoritism towards Fridays. Don't get me wrong, I'd be upset if someone took my Saturdays away, but there is something about a Friday. L.M. Montgomery (author of Anne of Green Gables  and complete genius) said it best when she penned, " You mayn't get the things themselves; but nothing can prevent you from having the fun of looking forward to them." Even if Saturday never came, I have all of Friday to think about what to do with that free time. The promise of a Saturday is, to me, more tantalizing than the day itself.  I dare Saturday to compete with my current Friday. Done with class at 11:15, finished at the gym by 12:30, TA application completed and turned in (in a manila folder-I've never felt so grown up!), well nourished by flank steak at the caf (one of the best meals I've had at OU), and in sweatpants, blogging, by 2:30 (oh wait-you mean other people DON'T o...

Edjumakashion (or, more formally, Education)

I'm currently taking my first major class, Critical Reading and Writing, and we have written one paper so far. English professors are notorious for lag-time on returning graded assignments so I'm still biting my nails over here as I wait for the final verdict on my first piece of prose for Dr. Anderson.  On Tuesday our class had a very interesting and rousing discussion about the general education requirements at OU. So rousing, in fact, that we spent a solid 45 minutes expositing the pros and cons (of course, this was also a clever ruse to delay our inevitable discourse about Flannery O'Connor's tragic tales like Good Country People  and A Good Man is Hard to Find ).  Nevertheless, several of my classmates had good points. OU requires several hours of history and government, two sciences (natural and physical, one with a lab and one without), two semesters of English, and 3 hours of math, regardless of your declared major. Most of us in the CRW class agreed that as...
